The attrition rates of newly licensed RNs in hospital direct patient care settings have caused concern among the members of major nursing organizations and hospital administrators. The nursing workforce is aging, and the retirement of older nurses is inevitable. During the 2008 recession in the United States, some nurses deferred their retirement. However, when the older nurses retire, the nursing workforce could experience serious shortages.
The COVID 19 pandemic since 2020 has caused additional strain on the healthcare systems in the USA and worldwide. Migration of nurses from developing countries will create a new cycle with more and more nurses encouraged to come to the developed countries, leaving their own countries without adequate staff to care for their ill patients. In this book, Dr. Edwards has presented a model for nursing to foster the retention of new nurses. New registered nurses are needed to replace the retiring nurses and continue the process of patient care. Therefore, retaining new registered nurses is paramount. New nurses, like other new graduates from any professional field, face graduation with the excitement of achieving their professional goals.
